The funeral for Boyd K. Packer, the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in the LDS Church, will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Tabernacle on Temple Square.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the funeral details Saturday.

The 90-year-old Packer, who had been ailing, died at his home in Salt Lake City on Friday afternoon.

The funeral will be open to the public ages 8 and older.

The Temple Square gates and the Tabernacle doors will open at 9:30 a.m., and those wishing to attend should be in their seats by 10:30 a.m. Friday, the church announcement said.

The Assembly Hall and North Visitors' Center on Temple Square will have overflow seating, but other buildings on the church campus will be closed from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Packer, a native of Brigham City, will be buried in a private service in the Brigham City Cemetery after the funeral.

The church said there will be no public viewing, but noted that those mourning Packer can post on his public Facebook page.

As of Saturday afternoon, dozens of people had commented on that page, expressing gratitude for his life.

"Shedding a few tears....." wrote Darice Billings-Taylor.

Stephen Mattice reminisced about meeting Packer after a session of General Conference in 1974, when Mattice was 22. He is now 63.

"He came over to us as we stood on the lawn," Mattice wrote. "I have never forgotten that moment nor the feeling that I had as I finally looked into his eyes."

Lauren Tanner said Packer had given her her first temple recommend (approval to enter the faith's temples) when she was 19, and he was president of the New England Mission.

"He was a wonderful mission president," Tanner wrote. "We all loved him."

Packer was one of the church's general authorities for more that five decades. He was next in line, behind President Thomas S. Monson, to be president of the 15 million-member faith. That distinction — and the role as president of the quorum — now falls to Russell M. Nelson, also 90.

Packer was born Sept. 10, 1924, and became a bomber pilot during World War II in the Pacific theater. He was an educator by profession.

Packer's death created a second vacancy in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

L. Tom Perry died May 30 of thyroid cancer. The church has not yet said when the two will be replaced.
