A disturbed man's claims to have lost an explosives-laden backpack near downtown Salt Lake City's FrontRunner and TRAX trains hub led to commuter delays and a tense, ultimately fruitless search by police.

No explosives or a backpack were found, Utah Transit Authority spokesman Remi Barron said. The hub, briefly closed down, was back in operation —and trains back on schedule — about an hour after the initial report.

Barron said the man approached passengers at the TRAX station at nearby North Temple about 7 a.m. Appearing to have mental health issues or possibly being under the influence of drugs, the man was "frantic" as he asked whether they had seen his backpack.

At some point, he also said the backpack contained explosives, though he did not specifically make a threat against the trains or stations in the area, Barron said.

UTA's Blue line trains were not allowed to travel onto the hub during the incident, instead stopping as the downtown Salt Lake City Planetarium station. A "bus bridge" service was instituted to cover the gap.

At 8:16 a.m. UTA Tweeted that the bus bridge service had been cancelled and that both TRAX and FrontRunner services were resuming.

UTA did not release a specific description of the man, but were trying to identify him through TRAX video feeds.
