A Layton man, careening along Interstate 15 at more than 100 mph while repeatedly dousing his lights to elude police, was killed along with another driver when he plowed into two vehicles late Monday night in Weber County.

The Utah Highway Patrol said the driver, 28-year-old Cory S. Bertine, was dead at the scene of the 9:40 p.m. Monday crash, near Pioneer Road (400 North) in Slaterville.

Carlos Valdez, 56, of Davis County, was rushed to McKay-Dee Hospital in critical condition but died early Tuesday of his injuries, troopers said.

Valdez was driving a Chevrolet van; the driver of a second car hit by Bertine sustained minor injuries.

UHP said all drivers involved in the crash were wearing seat belts, and none of them initially showed signs of having been impaired.

The collisions closed down southbound lanes of Interstate 15 well into early Tuesday morning, but wreckage had been cleared and full traffic flow restored in time for the morning commute.

Troopers said Bertine drove his northbound 1996 Toyota Camry onto southbound I-15 in Roy, prompting several 911 calls from motorists. Troopers spotted the man at 31st Street in Ogden and attempted to pull him over, but he sped away.

At Ogden's 12th Street, troopers again tried to stop Bertine. Instead, he repeatedly extinguished his lights to flee off freeway exits before reentering I-15, again in the wrong direction, eluding pursuers until the fatal crash.

UHP is investigating, among other things, the motive for Bertine's apparent intentional decision to drive onto the freeway against oncoming traffic.
