2 Utah companies are Good Food finalists

Two artisan food producers from Utah have been named finalists in the 2016 Good Food Awards. Ritual Chocolate was recognized for its Mid Mountain and Belize 75 percent cacoa bars in the chocolate category, while Armour's Spreads and its black currant blackberry jam and tayberry jam were selected in the preserves division. In all, the Good Food Awards recognizes companies in 13 categories from beer and cider to pickles and pantry. The winners in each category will be announced Friday, Jan. 15, during an awards ceremony in San Francisco.

UVU graduate wins Best Chef in the Americas honor

Victor Hugo Perez, a recent Utah Valley University culinary arts graduate, won the Hans Bueschkens Young Chef Challenge in Quito, Ecuador, earning him the title of "Best Chef in the Americas." He will now compete for the world title in Athens, Greece, in 2016 as part of the WorldChefs Congress. Perez defeated junior chefs from other countries in the Americas during the three-day competition held recently. For the competition, Perez had three hours to produce a three-course meal for four people. While at UVU, Perez was named American Culinary Federation's 2014 Western Regional Student Chef of the Year. He graduated with an associate degree in culinary arts in May 2014 and is planning to pursue a bachelor's degree at UVU in hospitality management. Hans J. Bueschkens was president of the Word Association of Chefs' Societies from 1980–1988 and created programs to interest youth in cooking.

Gourmet hot dogs in Sugar House

Red Hot, which specializes in gourmet hot dogs made from American Kobe beef, has opened a second Salt Lake City location in Sugar House. Owner Francis Lamb opened the first Red Hot in 2014 next door to Lamb's Grill, which he also owns. Just like the original location, the new Red Hot offers traditional dogs such as the Coney Island and a Chicago, but unique offerings such as the bacon-wrapped Hawaii Five-O, and the corned beef-topped Reuben. Bahn mi sandwiches, house-made lemonades and sides complete the menu.

Natural Grocers opens in Bountiful

Natural Grocers will open its fourth Utah store in Bountiful.

Tailgating recipe contest featuring Idaho spuds

The Idaho Potato Commission is celebrating college football season with a tailgating recipe contest. Fans can submit an original game-day recipe that features Idaho potatoes in a prominent and creative way. The grand prize is a trip for two to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, on Dec. 22 in Boise. The prize includes round-trip airfare, hotel, ground transportation, $1,000 spending money and a private behind-the-scenes tour with professional college football reporter, Heather Cox, who is promoting the contest through short videos. The winner also has the option of receiving $5,000 cash in lieu of the bowl game experience. Five runners up will each receive $500 cash.
