A 24-year-old Magna man is hospitalized after shooting himself in the groin while fleeing from Sandy police officers. Police attempted to pull over the man's vehicle about 3 a.m. Saturday when he fled from officers at a Maverik convenience store at 450 W. 90 South, said Sgt. Victor Quezada. After ditching his vehicle, which was reported stolen, the man shot himself in the groin after jumping a fence, Quezada said. Lumber truck

topples in canyon

A lumber truck traveling west in Big Cottonwood Canyon overturned, spilling its load on State Road 190 about 11:15 a.m. Saturday. The driver, identified as Marcos Daniel Pacheco, 29, was transported to Cottonwood hospital with abrasions to his back. Salt Lake County sheriff's Deputy Lenny Bruno said the highway was temporarily shut down to clean debris, but traffic was mostly reduced to one lane. Pacheco was traveling too fast and the vehicle's brakes had heated up when he came to a curve in the road and overturned, Bruno said. The driver probably will be cited for speeding and traveling left of the center line.
